Diet quality, liveweight change and responses to N supplements by cattle grazing

چکیده
Experiments during 4 years examined the diets selected, growth, and responses to N supplements by Bos indicus-cross steers grazing summer-rainfall semi-arid C4 Astrebla spp. (Mitchell grass) rangelands at a site in north-western Queensland, Australia. Paddock groups of were not supplemented (T-NIL), or fed non-protein (T-NPN) cottonseed meal (T-CSM) supplement. In Experiment 1, young older measured late dry season (LDS) rainy (RS), while 2–4 through annual cycle. Because severe drought measurements 3 cycle limited T-NIL steers. Pasture availability species composition twice annually. Diet was 1–2 week intervals using near infrared spectroscopy faeces (F.NIRS). Annual rainfalls (1 July–30 June) 42–68% long-term average (471 mm), seasonal break ranged from 17 December March. There wide variation pasture, diet (crude protein (CP), DM digestibility (DMD), CP metabolisable energy (CP/ME) ratio) steer liveweight change (LWC) within between cycles. High quality (LW) gain RS declined progressively transition (TS) early (EDS), often first part LDS. Steers commenced losing LW as LDS progressed. 1 2 where forbs comprised ≤15 g/kg pasture sward, selected strongly for so that they 117–236 diet. However, substantial proportions (173–397 g/kg), there comparable (300–396 g/kg). With appropriate stocking rates gains acceptable (121–220 kg) despite low rainfall. The had no effect on TS EDS, but usually reduced loss 20–30 kg Thus rainfall Mitchell grass pastures towards end when contained c. <58 g CP/kg <7.0 CP/MJ ME.

Rumen fermentation and liveweight gain in beef cattle treated with monensin and grazing lush forage.
OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of subacute rumen acidosis (SARA) in beef cattle grazing lush pasture and the effect of monensin on reducing SARA and improving animal performance. DESIGN Commercial Angus and Murray Grey steers received a monensin slow-release capsule (n = 19) or remained untreated (n = 19). Cattle grazed an oats crop or tetraploid ryegrass pasture for a total of 91 days...
متن کاملDifferential Responses of Postmetamorphic Amphibians to Cattle Grazing in Wetlands
Global amphibian declines have been linked to various anthropogenic land uses. Recent studies have documented negative impacts of cropland agriculture and deforestation on amphibians; however, few have examined potential impacts of cattle grazing in wetlands on resident amphibians. Therefore, we measured differences in number of captures and body size of postmetamorphic amphibians, egg mass abu...
متن کاملModelling the effect of nematode parasites on the liveweight gain of lambs grazing alternately with cattle
A dynamic model for nematode parasites in lambs which links their adult parasite burden with liveweight gain was extended to investigate alternate grazing with cattle to provide relatively larval-free pasture for finishing lambs. Liveweight performance of weaned lambs was tracked fortnightly under rotational grazing using three cattle:sheep ratios, with three initial parasite burdens and two in...
متن کاملPerformance of Weaner Cattle given Molasses and Supplements under Feedlot and Grazing Conditions
A series of feeding experiments were undertaken with weaner cattle to assess the effects on liveweight performance of supplementing a basal diet of molasses, urea and roughage with various protein and energy supplements. The supplements included extruded soyabeans, a mixture of extruded soyabean and crushed maize grain, or soyabean and crushed maize extruded together. These experiments indicate...
متن کاملEffects of grain by-products as supplements for stocker cattle grazing bermudagrass
Two experiments were conducted to compare corn, dried distillers’ grains (DDG), and pelleted soybean hulls (SH) as supplements for cattle grazing bermudagrass. In Exp. 1, 66 crossbred steers (306 ± 3.2 kg) were stratified by weight and allotted randomly to six 2.4-ha bermudagrass pastures for a 107-d study. One of three supplement treatments (corn, DDG, or SH) was assigned randomly to each past...
